Hard water contains dissolved minerals present as salts in solution. High water hardness causes scaling and corrosion of pipes. Total hardness is the sum of the alkaline and non-alkaline salts present in water or fluid. Two standard tests are recommended for testing water hardness to measure the calcium ion concentration and total hardness.
